The Flames began life as the Atlanta Flames in 1972, founded by Atlanta-based businessman Ted Turner. The team performed well during its first eight-year stint in Atlanta, reaching the playoffs six times. Flames came to Calgary in 1980, from where the team has continued its successful march, including a Stanley Cup victory in 1989.

Early Stars

Flames' vintage list of players included wing Bob Millan and centers Tom Lysiak and Curt Bennett. During their first season in Calgary in 1980, center Kent Nilsson made a franchise-record 131 points. In the same season Flames reached the semi finals of Stanley Cup but lost to Minnesota North Stars.

The Struggle And The Success

In 1986, headed by Coach Bob Johnson, Flames went on to reach the finals of Stanley Cup for the first time. There they faced the Montreal Canadiens, to whom they lost 1 game to 4.

In 1989, under Coach Terry Crisp, Flames again reached the Stanley Cup finals and this time they defeated the Canadiens 4 games to 2. Their team included some of NHL All-Star members like wings Hakan Loob and Joe Mullen; center Joe Nieuwendyk; defensemen Al MacInnis, Gary Suter and Brad McCrimmon; and goalie Mike Vernon. That year MacInnis scored the highest 31 playoff points and bagged the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player.

In 2004, Calgary Flames again went as far as the Stanley Cup Finals but they lost. Flames had an excellent 2005-06, finishing at the top of the Northwest Division. The team finished a disappointing 3rd place in the 2006-07 season.
