Long before pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides were developed, there was only one way to grow roses-with organic rose gardening.  Today many people are choosing to return to this traditional way to grow their roses.  They prefer not to use chemicals on their plants.

Organic rose gardening means you, your pets, and family members will not be exposed to potentially harmful chemicals.  In addition, the blooms your plants produce will be healthier.  And they'll be even more beautiful, as well!

Like everything that occurs naturally in life, man doesn't need to intervene for roses to grow.  As mentioned, pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides didn't even exist for millions of years.  It's only relatively recently that manmade chemicals have been introduced-and not always with positive results.

Plants like roses are designed to care for themselves.  Leaves use the process of photosynthesis to create energy from sunlight.  Roots reach down deep into the soil to collect and absorb water and needed nutrients.  And the soil already has microorganisms and worms that take decomposing organic matter and turn it into the nutrients the plants require.

When chemical pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides are added to the soil and the plants, some of the beneficial organisms are killed.  This can prevent the necessary nutrients from being absorbed by the plant through its roots.  In addition, good bacteria gets killed, as well.  These good bacteria prevent against the development of certain kinds of organisms and fungi, and without them, plants can become diseased.  In addition, plants like roses can actually become dependent on the chemicals, and that's not a good thing.

Did you know it is actually easier and less expensive to grow roses organically?  You don't have to pay for any chemicals!  Natural pest control measures and fertilizers are less expensive-or free-and provide what your roses need.
For instance, you can create your own natural fertilizer by composting.  It's easy to do.  Simply designate a place in your yard-either in a container or on a particular spot-where you heap biodegradable organic waste products like leaves, plant trimmings, vegetable and fruit peelings, and coffee grounds.  Let the compost decay naturally, stirring it periodically so it continues to break down.  This compost will provide necessary nutrients for your roses or other plants, as well.

When you don't use pesticides, nature does a pretty good job of keeping insects under control.  Chemical pesticides, on the other hand, kill good insects in addition to pests, so it's best to avoid them.  There are many natural predators that will keep your pests from doing any real damage to your roses without human intervention.

For example, wasps, ladybugs, lizards, snakes, and birds all eat insect pests and help keep them to a minimum.  But if you don't have enough of these natural predators or your plants need a helping hand, look for non-toxic organic pesticides available today.  You can find them easily at garden supply stores.

You can usually find a natural pesticide that will target whatever insect is a problem for your roses and will not harm the other insects that are beneficial, as well.

Chemicals aren't required to grow beautiful, large, and fragrant roses.  It's simply a matter of spending time tending your rose garden instead of investing money on pesticides and other chemicals.  But once you see the results of organic rose gardening, you'll be thrilled with the results!
