Is Your Life Balance Caught In A Web?

My kids love to watch super heroes on TV and at the movies. Well actually so do I. So recently I took my son and daughter to see Spiderman 3. What amazes me about super heroes is their passion.

What I want to know is when does Peter Parker sleep? Yeah I know his DNA has been adjusted so there are no missing gaps and he has all these super strengths but does he ever sleep? He's out swinging all night, web slinging criminals and goes to school during the day. In this episode even when you think he's going to get some shuteye, he lies down on his bed only to be taken over by some mood altering space black goop. In the first installment, when he first became Spiderman, after being bit by the DNA altering spider was the last time we see Peter snooze.

Instead of an alarm clock he has a scanner on the side of his bed that constantly blares. What I also want to know is how is he going to cope when he and Mary Jane finally have kids? He'll have a wife, kids, the Super Hero gig, bills to pay, a house somewhere, chores, and a job. If he thinks he's not getting any downtime now, boy will he be in for a rude awakening. The deadline pressures, the unending criminal activities and kids like him, never sleeping, will surely do Mary Jane in. She after all is simply a normal girl from Queens.

You know, being a super hero after all may not be such a hot idea. I mean can a super hero outsource? The super hero thing doesn't even provide an income, just ethical and moral dilemmas that need resolving on a nightly basis. His super speed may help him and Mary Jane clean a house in record time or his spider senses might help him notice subtle nuances that may help him find the ultimate cure for disastrous diseases. But he continually is unable to sense what Mary Jane is thinking or feeling. My wife tells me, that practically no man gets that one right either.

Mary Jane understands his need to be a super hero. But with time, I'm sure she'll want him to spend more time with her and the kids instead of swinging around the big old city night after night. After all he is rally human and he will after a time begin to deteriorate. Or does the DNA make him stay that way forever making him immortal? So he'll be left watching Mary Jane age while he raises a group of super hero kids that spend eternity defending a just and compassionate society.

Maybe the lesson is that we all have to find a balance in our lives. Whether we have super powers or not. Our passion will always pull at our obligations and the people in our lives will question our loyalty to them. But at the end of the day we have to get some rest. It's during the time immediately before then that we can remind the people in our lives that we truly love them.

Try spending at least 10 minutes with each of your children talking and more importantly listening intently to what happened with their day. Help them feel good about themselves before their slumber. Find something to giggle or laugh about. Discover what's bothering them. The life you save may simply be theirs.

How about telling your significant other how much you really care for them and find something good that happened for each of you this day before you both close your eyes for the night. You will find that when the passion for the work you do has the love of those that matter most, in your life, that you too are a superhero. But unlike a superhero with altered DNA, you need your sleep to have the strength for another day. Another day to be a mild mannered person, who when giving your utmost attention to those you love makes you a super hero. Letting the memories of love, laughter, and compassion fill in the missing pieces of your DNA making you complete before you head off to fight the villains of your day.
