In this high tech day-and-age of golf, there are several ways to learn how to play better golf. Whether you are a beginner, novice or just a struggling golfer that just flat out wants to improve, you have a couple options. You can take lessons from a Pro or you can Teach Yourself. I will discuss the pros and cons of each option.

By going to a pro, you will have to commit many hours to learning the way or "the method" that pro teaches golf. They all have their own unique systems or secrets that they feel will help you learn how to play golf. I am not saying this is a bad thing, but warning you that it is usually their way or the highway and can lead to a lot of frustration by the learning golfer.

This can also be very expensive based on how much money the pro charges per hour or session. It is best to set-up a package deal or series of lessons for a better hourly rate.

Also, you will have to be very committed to this person and the time required to complete their program and learn their method in order to expect positive results in the end. It is best to "shop around" if you will, and make sure you are comfortable with this person right away. Maybe even ask if you can get an introductory lesson at a discount rate or even for free, before you make the big decision to go the pro route.

With the abundance of information available in books and on the internet, you can successfully get out and learn how to play golf on your own.

This will also require a commitment of time, but will be a lot less costly if done correctly. Not to mention the satisfaction you get from learning golf on your own terms.

You will need to follow the program 100% from start to finish and not try to jump ahead at any point, even if your are a mid to low handicap player that is looking to improve your golf game. This is because, so much of learning to play golf or better golf starts and ends with basic golf skills, which needs to be properly learned and ingrained, then utilized at all times.

That last sentence is really the key to golf and is why you can teach yourself by simply paying attention to the basics in detail.

So - If this sounds like the route for you, be sure to pick a book or program that focuses on the basics first and then teaches you the advanced stuff later. Some golf instruction programs also offer training aids or tools to help you learn, but we will save this topic for another day.
