The Kalahari Desert penetrates the arid woodland of northern Botswana, producing typical Kalahari scenes of shimmering mirages, springbok herds, stately gemsbok and regal black-maned lion. All this can be seen on the fossilised grasslands and pan system of Nxai Pan National Park, along with the historic Baines' Baobabs. The dry season animal concentrations are enjoyed on drives that explore the areas surrounding the shallow pan systems and isolated waterholes. Islands of stunted acacia and savannah provide shade for predators such as cheetah and lion, while specialised species as diverse as meerkats and springbok thrive on the plains.
• A short Exploration providing an exceptional and unique Kalahari Desert experience.
• Easily combined with longer Explorations trips such as Migration Routes, as well as to other itineraries exploring the Okavango Delta and Linyanti regions.
• Nxai Pan offers a unique habitat including desert-adapted species not present in other areas of Botswana (such as springbok, gemsbok and red hartebeest).
A three-night stay here provides a perfect contrast to the Okavango and Linyanti regions and rounds off the diversity of northern Botswana.
Adventurer Explorations combine unique mobile camps with a variety of other locations and accommodation, to provide an intimate, insightful encounter with the country or region.
For the Adventurer Explorations, we utilise a spacious walk-in dome tent. The comfortable interior has canvas bedrolls, crisp cotton sheets and duvets set out on GI stretchers, complemented with old-fashioned tin finishes, recreating a sense of simple style under canvas. Shared toilets and bucket shower enclosures open to the sky and inviting dining areas offer an atmosphere of understated, serviced camping.
These camps are erected prior to our guests' arrival. This, coupled with the wildlife-rich areas visited and the easy mobility of the camps, allow us to explore the most remote areas of the subcontinent. Adventurer camping features lively campfires, camps lit by hurricane lanterns and a range of exciting and diverse activities, creating a pure wilderness camping experience with a warm atmosphere and camaraderie. High standards in mobile safaris are to be found on Adventurer Explorations, as comfort and experience are redefined.
Itinerary
Days 1, 2 & 3: Nxai Pan, Nxai Pan National Park
Upon arrival in Maun and once all guests are assembled, we depart overland to our pre-erected private Adventurer campsite in the Nxai Pan National Park.
The Kalahari Desert pans around Nxai Pan are fossilised and covered with short nutritious grasses and stunted acacia trees, creating wildlife-rich areas surrounded by vegetated dune savannahs. Extensive game drives explore the surrounding pans, with an excellent chance of seeing spectacular dry-season predator-and-prey interaction at the waterholes. Possible game sightings include gemsbok (oryx), springbok, even the elusive black-maned lion and a range of other different uniquely adapted wildlife not often seen in the savannah regions found in northern Botswana.
Close by is the famous Baine's Baobabs tree island, a series of enormous old baobab trees on the edge of the shimmering white Kudiakam saltpan. These trees were painted by Thomas Baines on his exploratory expedition in the late 19th century.
Day 4: Road transfer to Maun
After an early breakfast, we travel by road back to Maun, arriving in time to bid farewell to your Botswana Safari and board your departing flight.
