Rosacea is a skin problem that is caused by progressive vascular disorders. It begins as a mild flush across the nose, the cheeks, the chin, the forehead and sometimes on the chest and back. As the disease continues to progress, more intense symptoms start to occur. Its three progressive stages involve different symptoms at different intensities.

The risk of developing rosacea is growing. More and more people are registered with this problem all over the world. On each continent a high number of persons notice its symptoms. No treatment for curing rosacea is available, but doctors can easily prescribe medicines that might help to ease the symptoms or to prevent complications.

Even if it is a common skin disorder, rosacea is misunderstood and misdiagnosed. Rosacea was confused with acne during the past years. Nowadays rosacea is considered a distinct medical condition that requires early diagnosis and proper treatment.

As we said before this health problem develops gradually. In the first phase the patients may not realize that they are developing rosacea because of the mild symptoms that may be confused with the symptoms caused by sunburn or windburn. Anyway, it is good to recognize rosacea in its early stage because, otherwise, it may lead to complications such as disfigurement and possible vision loss.

There is no test to help realize if it is rosacea or not but the appearance and other factors such as typical target population and response to various therapies make accurate diagnosis possible.

Even if it is incurable, rosacea progress might be controlled and even stopped with the help of medical therapy.

Many studies were done in order to find out more about this chronic and progressive skin problem. A Swedish study showed that 14 % of women and 5 % of men are prone to develop rosacea. A proved fact is the American study that encountered a number of 13 million patients in the United States. This means that about 1 out of 20 Americans developed rosacea.

The statistics proved that fair-skinned people from the northern Europe are more prone to develop rosacea. A number of 10 million British people that have rosacea prove the statistic conclusion.

As potential causes, specialists say that therapies for Helicobacter pylori in peptic ulcer disease may be associated with an improvement in rosacea symptoms. Demodex folliculorum has also been considered as a contributing factor to rosacea.

The cause of rosacea is unknown but it is believed to be other than vascular origin because of a clinical association with flushing, development of telangiectasia and tissue swelling, and ultimately, tissue proliferation and rhinophyma.
