Brno, Aug 18 (CTK) - Imports of cheap footwear from China to the Czech Republic grew by dozens of percent year-on-year to more than 86 million pairs of shoes in H1, approximately the same amount as for the entire 2006, Vlasta Mayerova of the Czech Footwear and Leather Association (COKA) told CTK Monday.

In addition, Chinese footwear is becoming gradually cheaper. While last year a pair of Chinese shoes cost Kc35 on average, this year the price stands at around Kc30.

Czech shoemakers claim the Chinese competition is gradually liquidating domestic production. Over the past 17 years domestic production has decreased by more than ten times, from 71 million pairs of shoes produced in 1990 to 5.1 million pairs last year.

The number of employees in the shoemaking industry has fallen markedly, too. While in the early 1990s shoemaking companies employed over 35,000 staff, last year the figure stood around 4,000.

On the other hand, footwear exports from the Czech Republic are on the rise, increasing by hundreds of percent each year. Over 142 millions of pairs of shoes were exported from the Czech Republic last year, of which 120 million were made in China.

"The situation is not rosy. The industry has hit the bottom several years ago already, so we are not expecting any drastic changes," Mayerova said. She added, however, that producers are troubled by the strong crown and high prices of input materials.
