Drunk driving is the most common cause of road accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), any motor vehicle accident is considered alcohol-related if either the offender or the victim involved in the accident is determined to have had a blood alcohol concentration or BAC of .01 gram per deciliter (g/dL) or higher. People often ignore the legal, physical and emotional implications of drunk driving. Nearly 41 percent of vehicle crashes are alcohol related.

Not all victims of drunk driving crashes are killed. Many manage to survive the crashes, but face years of pain and debilitation.

It is estimated that expenses related to accidents is a staggering $135 billion per year. Out of this amount, $51 billion is due to fatal motor vehicle accidents. The average expenditure per survivor of an alcohol-related car crash is $67,000. Of this figure, $6,000 is spent in health care costs and $13,000 in hampered productivity. The financial costs are, of course, negligible as compared to the pain and trauma that drunk driving victims undergo for a lifetime. Most victims, who survived from a crash, have to undergo physiotherapy and relearn the basic skills of walking and talking.

A victim of a violent crash has certain legal rights under the United States law. An injured survivor or a relative of a deceased victim has the right to attend all court proceedings. They are entitled to apply for compensation under specific laws in various states such as the California's Victim?s of Crimes Act. Many organizations are available to extend help to victims on financial, legal and medical issues. These organizations provide grief support through sympathetic listening. They provide books and brochures that are customized to tackle the specific needs of mourning relatives. They also provide literature on recuperating financially from a drunk driving crash, and they help obtain the crash details report, autopsy report and the offender's driving record. Most charitable institutes and other organizations are enlightening people and creating mass awareness through educational programs, public awareness programs and victim services.
