Internet Marketing - Choosing Your Direction

There is a logical first decision you should make if you are entering the internet marketing business. What form of marketing should I direct my efforts toward? Should I sell physical products, or would I be better off selling services? What you have already learned, if you are interested in starting your own home based business, is that there are a myriad of opportunities for someone who is looking to create an online income. Some are good, some are bad, and many will produce results only after you find the "magic formula" that puts all the pieces together. There is also the one in a thousand that take off as if they are tied to a rocket. Don't count on that happening. It's possible, but unlikely.

The vast majority of internet marketing success stories have come only after much trial and error, with a good dose of reality thrown in. We only seem to see the amazing sales records, or the five figure per day affiliate account screenshots. What we don't see, are the months and years of toil and hard financial times that make up the normal existence of most marketers.

If you think I am painting a bleak picture of the world of internet marketing, I would say in my defense that I am only trying to dislodge the "fairy tale" mentality that is fostered by some "salesmen" in order to quickly increase their own fortunes. To prosper, and to help others do the same, is the name of the game for reputable business people.

That is the point. If you treat people how you would want to be treated... I know it's cliche, but it's also true. I cannot over-stress the importance of this practice and how it will affect your results in the long run, and the long run is how most of us will eventually profit. Add that practice to a steady concerted effort, and over time you will not fail. As Chief Dan George said in the movie "The Outlaw Josey Wales", "you must endeavor to persevere!"

The methods most likely to succeed in any business are to read anything you can get your hands on that pertains, visit forums, find out who is successful, and why. Try to copy their methods, and remember to view your own services as a prospective buyer. Put yourself in their shoes. Focus your energy and time on one thing until you can make a decision as to whether it is worth continuing or not. Don't try to do too many things at once. There are thousands of choices out there to pick from, don't just jump on the first one that comes along.

Lately, I've noticed a lot of websites that incorporate lists into their strategy. I think that list-building is the way of the future, as long as legitimate opt-in and opt-out methods are included. Spam is not tolerated anymore, and rightly so. Who wants a mailbox full of un-asked for trash? Not to mention the fact that you won't get far with search engines, hosts, nor vendors as it is the kiss-of-death to their business'. Creating a list of prospects will give you very targeted customers over time, and those same customers are the people to whom you will be selling.

Starting out in the internet marketing business is a lot like jumping into the ocean; after you get over the initial shock, you warm up to it, and then it's just a matter of watching out for sharks.

To your success, P. Nichols
