3951SW Allegro PWM Motor Driver

A3951SW is a full-bridge PWM motor driver produced by Allegro MicroSystems, Inc. A3951SW is designed for bidirectional pulse-width modulated current control of inductive loads. It is capable of continuous output currents to ±2 A and operating voltages to 50 V. Off-time PWM current-control circuitry of A3951SW can be utilized to regulate the maximum load current to a desired value.

Its user's selection of an input reference voltage and external sensing resistor can set its peak load current limit. Fixed off-time pulse duration of A3951SW can be set by user selected external RC timing network. Its features such as thermal shutdown with hysteresis, transient suppression diodes, and crossover-current protection offer internal circuit protection. The PHASE input controls load current polarity by selecting the appropriate source and sink driver pair. The false triggering of the PWM current control circuitry is prevented by a user-selectable blanking window. If the ENABLE input is held high then all output drivers are disabled.


The braking function, used to dynamically brake brush dc motors, is enabled when a logic low is applied to the BRAKE input. It thus overrides ENABLE and PHASE to turn off both source drivers and turn on both sink drivers. The A3951SW is supplied in a 12-pin single in-line power-tab package.


Some of the features of A3951SW include a ±2 continuous output current rating, 50 V output voltage rating, internal PWM current control, internal transient suppression diodes, and under-voltage lockout. A3951SW also offers internal thermal shutdown circuitry, crossover-current protection and a default brake current limit. A3951SW has an internally generated dead time prevents crossover currents that can occur when switching phase or braking. Should the junction temperature reach 165°C, all drivers are turned off by the thermal protection circuitry.
