Bodrum Peninsula
A Short History of Bodrum
The reason that Bodrum is extremely popular is not only because of the beautiful scenery and architecture but also the remarkable Mausoleum of Halicarnassus that was built in the 4th Century BC by King Mausolus. Although it was ruined by a catastrophic earthquake it has since be restored and is now an adaptation of the former theatre and is often used for theatrical performances, which don't go unnoticed as the theatre itself stands high above the town. The town also played an important role when it was involved with the crusades which are the reason for its two medieval landmarks, the ottoman-era castle and St Peter's church.
Travel Route
The most popular and easy way to get to Bodrum is by flying to the modern airport 30 kilometres away. The only catch is that you can only fly internally from Istanbul or Ankara. There is a rail route and ferries but these are definitely the less popular option. If you prefer to drive then you will get beautiful views of the coast line, which will distract you from the long drive ahead. There are plenty of opportunities to rent a hire car from Antalya, however if you dont want to risk turning up on the day book online with the hire car specialist Car Rentals.co.uk which offer a very good deal.
Accommodation
Because the town has grown since tourists started arriving there are older more quaint places to stay and some modern guesthouses and hotels. The Hotels and guest houses are all in walking distance form the harbour but you will find these are the most expensive places to stay. If you are looking for a smaller, cheaper but still beautiful place to stay you will easily find somewhere to stay in the old town. There is plenty of accommodation but during the high season advance booking will be needed as the nicer accommodation is taken earliest.
Day Trips
If you are visiting the spectacular peninsula you must explore all the beautiful sights and towns. If you are looking for a quiet day on the beach then visiting Ortakent is the beach for you as it a small private beach or Torba is a quiet little bay in a quaint little village. If the weather is disappointing then Bitez has a picturesque boulevard with cafe's serving fabulous food. If you would like to try windsurfing then Akyalar will suit you just right, with great camping facilities and powdery white sand.
