Many anglers who aim to catch big wary carp use different boilies to normal that work without any artificial flavours. Much of the success of new boilies is that they are new and different and anyone can make such baits. Sometimes merely dipping a popular readymade bait in a flavour dip is not enough to really improve results. Making your very own nutritionally-attractive, enzyme-active baits using banana and passion fruit is certainly a great method for wise big old fish.

One of the fastest and simplest ways to get into bait making without much knowledge of carp senses, sensitivities, their essential dietary needs or digestion processes and implications etc is to use readymade boilie base mixes. The usually come with instructions and recipe suggestions. In this case you might choose a base mix such as Live System, from CC Moore. This is an exceptionally well proven complete food bait supplying all of the essential nutrients carp require, and better still, it works very well in winter or summer.

If you like sweet type baits this base mix is ideal and it smells strongly of milk due to the milk protein ingredients and special additives it contains. It is also designed to be very easily digested by carp so they get full benefit of the nutrition provided and so seek out even more when you fish with it repeatedly!

All I would suggest you do with this mix for example, is get a few kilograms of Live System dry powder base mix and experiment with mixing it. Try first adding about 3 liquidised skinned passion fruits and half a very ripe banana to 5 or 6 eggs. Whisk all these together thoroughly and then gradually add your Live System base mix powders until you have a nice bread dough-like consistency. Use this to make your paste, pellet or boilie baits etc.

If your mix is too wet just add more powder. Do this gradually and you will consistently avoid making doughs that are a bit too dry or crumbly to mold into individual baits. The fruit aromas with be very noticeable but less subtle in some ways than using synthetic flavours. Just follow instructions for boiling you rolled paste bait balls to make them into boilies, and dry them. I would advise you to get the best from these fruits by making a bait soak of fresh liquidised skinned passion fruits and very ripe banana.

It is vital you use very ripe fruits so they have fully developed all the fish-catching substances they contain. These include significant levels of flavours, sugars, various really attractive and useful bioactive compounds such as bioflavonoids and vitamins, minerals, fruit oils and vital live enzymes and inulin that improve bait digestion once consumed! (As you can imagine, Live System base mix is not called that for nothing either!)

I would make quite soft baits for cold winter and spring conditions - these will last longer in the water anyway. Try tipping your hair rig under your baits with half a trimmed tiger nut soaked in Betaine and Talin for instance just in case you bait gets pulled off - this unusual tip can leave you with a longer hair rig with a very attractive boosted bait still left on that can easily defeat fish caution in cold weather!
