South Pacific is a one-of-a-kind, not to be missed musical, which will surely have you tapping your feet 10 minutes into the show. A true genius of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, the production is one of Broadway's most loved and longest running musicals. It is also one of the most revived shows.

Synopsis

Set during World War II, South Pacific is essentially a romance, with equal portion servings of comedy, drama, music and emotions. A wealthy French planter and owner of the biggest plantation on the Pacific Island where the musical is set, Emile de Becque, falls in love with a charming American nurse, Ensign Nellie Forbush. Emile asks Nellie to be his wife and she happily agrees.

Meanwhile, discovering that not much will happen at the small Pacific Island, Lieutenant Joe Cable of the U.S. Marine Corps sets out on a voyage to the mysterious small island of Bali Ha'i. Once there and exploring, Joe meets Liat, a local resident. Although she speaks only French and Joe only English, they fall hopelessly in love. Sadly though, Joe cannot marry Liat as he has to undertake a dangerous mission. Upon discovering this, Bloody Mary (Liat's mother) drags her daughter away, mumbling that she would get her married to someone else.

On the other hand, Nellie discovers that Emile has 2 biracial children and breaks up with him, due to her own deep set ethnic prejudices. Discovering that he has nothing to live for, Emile accompanies Joe on his dangerous mission to the Japanese Island. In the course of the war, Cable dies but Emile survives. He comes back home to discover that Nellie is taking care of his children, playing with them and feeding them.
