Clever Tips to Beat the Hand Luggage Ban and Stay Beautiful In-flight

The thought of a holiday and jetting off to sunnier climes should transport you into a relaxed state, but the packing may send you to Stress City, especially with all the new rules about hand luggage.

The current restrictions on beauty products that can be taken on board mean you can't take bottles of liquids, gels and creams, containing more then 100ml, and products have to fit into a transparent bag no larger than 20cm by 20cm.

This can lead to a nightmare scenario when your favourite products get confiscated at the airport because they don't conform to the strict regulations.

One thing you should never skimp on when flying is hydration. Look for tiny bottles of water you can mist on your face during the flight. Follow that up with moisturiser, and you'll lock in moisture to fight the effects of drying aeroplane air.

Used together, the powerful combination of Prescriptives Super Flight Cream and Flight Mist, £25 each, creates a barrier on the skin to prevent moisture from escaping. The Body Shop Vitamin E Face Mist, £6 is a cheap but effective thirst-quencher for the skin.

If you want all the planning done for you, invest in a Lancome Travel Essentials set, which, for £17, contains travel-ready sizes of cleanser, toner and moisturiser already in a security-approved bag.

But what about the stuff you stow away? If you plan to travel light, it pays to pack just for the week, or fortnight.

Take inexpensive, small items that you won't mind leaving behind. I always buy colour cosmetics and perfumes duty free - it's cheaper, and your purchases aren't subject to the rules when you buy them after you've cleared security.

Going away doesn't mean sacrificing your normal beauty routine. It's worth spending a few pounds on a set of refillable bottles and decanting just enough to get you through.

Rinse the bottles out and on the way back, they'll weigh next to nothing.

…All the more capacity for souvenirs!
