Entertainment Articles - Red On Broadway Review
The story tells of abstract New York artist Mark Rothkois covering a two year period of the late 1950's. Rothkois is at work in his studio during this time with his assistant to complete a mural for the Four Seasons restaurant in Manhattan's Seagram's Building. The audience can see the personality of the painter through his intellectual and controlling interactions with his young assistant. The two spend their time talking and debating the art they love bringing the story to life.
The most interesting part of Red on Broadway which surfaces brilliantly within the plot and through the acting is the artist's struggle for integrity throughout his process. The mural he is working on are a job and one in which he will receive a great commission for. Rothkois's murals and works of expressionism had begun to garner attention and fame as he was on his way to being one of the most revered artists of the 20th century. His murals have even been in comparison to that of the flashy artwork of the Sistine Chapel. His internal struggle to move forward within commercialism, greed and other traits that he detested lead him to self-questioning and doubt.
Red on Broadway captured a huge evening at the Tony-Awards. The play had seven nominations in which it took home all of them but one. It won for Best Play, Best Direction of a Play (Michael Grandage), Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play (Eddie Redmayne), Best Scenic Design of a Play (Christopher Oram) , Best Sound Design of a Play (Neil Austin) and Best Lighting Design of a Play (Adam Cork).
Red on Broadway takes the audience through the two most important years of Mark Rothkois's work in 90 minutes. The audience is invited into his studio and get to witness the mixing of paints, laying out of canvas and the communication throughout this massive undertaking. The rhythmic and metaphorical language brings out the depth and emotions of these two characters which provide great enjoyment to any audience regardless of their knowledge in arts or the painter himself. "Red" is certainly a play worth catching and seems to fit right into its New York City home at the John Golden Theatre. Who knows how long this great play will be on Broadway and with all the critical acclaim, Tony Awards and buzz grab your seats and enjoy the show!
