The status of the woman in the culture of the Latin America was traditionally quite low. In contrast to the American culture, where the ideas of feminism are quite widespread, in the countries of Latin America the image of women is quite inveterate in the minds of people. This attitude refers to the ideas of "Maryism", which means that the women have to follow the Catholic ideal of the Virgin Maria. This idea also is connected with the ideology of machismo, which supports the determinant role of the men in the society and the family. These categorical theories prevent the movement of women into Latin America. All these ideas were clearly expressed in the Latin America literature. The cruel customs and idea subjugate Tita, the main personage of the novella "Like Water for Chocolate" by Laura Esquivel. This novella helps to understand the situation and create the full view on the position of women in the culture of Latin America.

The life of Tita, the main character of the novella "In Like Water for Chocolate", was predictable and planned before her birth. According to the customs of the family she could never fall in love with the man and merry. Her main and only predestination was to care and look after her mother in her old age. Tita`s mother, Elena was very resentful because of the loss of her husband. And because of her spite, Elena refused Tita to merry with her beloved man, Pedro and offered him to merry with her another daughter, Rosaura. Tita was upset and angry.

These cruel and strange traditions, which are widespread in the countries of Latin America, are expressed in the novella on the example of Tita, the woman, which during all her life tried to struggle with these traditions for the sake of her own feelings and desires.
