There are only a few people who use window flower boxes as part of their pretty home. Because of this, window boxes are unique tools for beautification of the entire home.

Getting started with your own garden in a window box is easy. Before doing so, Measurements are needed to be taken. Here are some guidelines:

·         The width of the windows determines the final length of the boxes. You need to adjust the dimensions of the window boxes to match each type of window.

·         The depth and height should be large enough to hold pots or an amount of dirt so that it will be able to retain moisture for a few days.

·         To support the height of the box and the dirt that will fill it, use brackets. A cardboard template should be created to help you later cut notches into the bracket.

Selecting the kind of wood plays a very vital role in creating the window box that you want to use. Some wood are not fit for such project. Here are some examples of common wood available in the market that is not good for several reasons:

·         Pine rots easily. There's not a good choice for this project because of the inherent moisture from the dirt and plants as well as normal weathering.

·         Oak produces a black color when wet, which is quite unattractive.

·         Cyprus contains high concentration of oil, which makes it nearly resistant to the effects of weather. This type of wood gained popularity in the South and getting more popular across the country.

·         Cedar is decay-resistant and more importantly very affordable. You can leave it in its natural color or, to produce a different effect, you can have it stained. You can either have a rough or smooth finish.

·         Teak and Mahogany are more exotic, beautiful but an expensive choice.
