Acid Reflux, also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), is a condition which has many symptoms that are similar to heartburn. In many cases, people suffering from Acid Reflux typically suffer from persistent heartburn two or more days per week. In the long term, this can be very serious since, over time, the reflux of stomach acid can erode or wear away the delicate esophagus lining. This can then lead to scar tissue, which causes swallowing problems. GERD has also been linked to an increased risk of esophageal cancer.

Heartburn is a burning sensation and pain in the stomach and chest, behind the breastbone. The symptoms of heartburn are the following: bloating, gas, nausea, shortness of breath and/or an acidic or sour taste in the throat and mouth.Heartburn is caused when hydrochloric acid, which is use to digest food, is release up the esophagus. On its way up the acid irritates the sensitive tissues in the esophagus and throat.

Pay Close Attention to Your Diet - Foods and drinks that aggravate GERD include spicy foods, acid based foods, greasy foods, alcohol, and caffeine. Before you bite into that pizza or fried chicken, think about how you are going to feel a couple of hours from now. Before you drink those beers, followed by that cup of coffee, think about the last time you did that and were up all night. If you are suicidal and enjoy great pain, drink that big glass or orange juice on an empty stomach. Sometimes changing your diet can be the key in controlling acid reflux.

Herbal tea is one of the well-known herbal remedies for acid reflux and the associated heartburn. It helps reduce the amount of acid in the stomach. The ingredients of herbal tea consist of aniseed, peppermint and lavender. Here's how we make it. Mix equal quantities of all the three herbs. Boil two and a half cup water and pour it over a teaspoon of the mixture. Let the tea sit for about five minutes. Now strain the tea and add a bit of honey (optional). Drink up to 8 oz in the morning and the same in the evening for relieving acid reflux.

Taking herbs such as chamomile, gentian and ginger can also help relieve acid reflux. You can couple these herbs with your acid reflux diet to sooth stomach muscles and other unwanted symptoms. The benefit of using herbs is that they tend to have no harsh side effects and can be used for the long term.

One of the more unknown remedies for acid reflux is apple cider vinegar. In addition to treating GERD apple cider vinegar is also rumored to help with weight loss, acne, cholesterol, constipation, and heartburn. It is believed that the acidity of the vinegar mimics the acid in your stomach helping to more easily digest the food that has been eaten. The best way to take apple cider vinegar is just before or with your meal. One tablespoon mixed with water works best but make sure to use the organic variety, which still has the enzymes in it.
