What makes a good designer?

There are a slew of designers out there all attempting to gain your attention to offer their design services. There is also a number of do-it yourselves out there attempting to by pass the designer altogether. When both venues appeal to you and you are attempting to decide whether to fork out the cash to pay for a designer or to spend that cash on design materials to do-it-yourself, the first question might just be, what is it that makes a great designer?

A great designer not only has creative vision but also resourcefulness and an eye for design materials. With a million and one choices in any neighbourhood hardware, design or craft store purchasing know-how comes in handy. But just because you don't know whether to buy a sponge roller or a nylon roller for your project doesn't mean that you can't design your home with warmth, charm and, what should be in the mix anyway, a little bit of you.

Although you may need to do your homework to be able to establish this feat, you may be happily surprised that you could conjure up the patience and stamina to create a luxurious home design. The majority of clerks in your local hardware and building supply stores will be happy to assist you in figuring out which brush or roller, paint or wallpaper, or other in house materials to use for which project. Many also have detailed project ideas to assist you, as well as design classes for those of you who want to absorb all the information that you can.

A great designer has great organization skills. When you are addressing questions for a professional designer ask about past interior design jobs and how they were prepared. The designer's answers should give you a hint into his experience and organization skills to keep your design project running in tip-top shape.

If you are doing the project yourself…you'll have to, well, get organized, there I said it! I know that sigh but to make sure you don't run into any snags during your work of art being organized with your project will keep your stress level down and a thank you note to me in the mail. If you have already figured out which colour scheme, theme or texture you will be going with for your project a detailed material list should follow. This list should be developed from beginning to the end.

Whether you will be painting the room or using wallpaper make sure to take a measurement of the walls to have a good estimate of how much you will need to purchase to get the job done, remember a little more is better then a little less. Moreover, there are some paints that you may have to add a second and/or third coat of paint to get it to that perfect shade you were looking for, so be sure to ask for help when purchasing your paint products.

Lastly, but certainly not lest, have a great time. Have fun while putting your design together. Creativity is a blast and if you are doing this yourself you will not only obtain a smile on your face when you have completed such a creatively designed room, but you will certainly be proud of yourself for accomplishing this endeavour.
