There are many factors affecting the evolution of the concepts of necessity, comfort and luxury.
But the power of the innovative and inventive mind resulting to technological advancements plays a crucial role. To further study this, the three key concepts that this paper will tackle should be established first.
The three concepts are defined according to the urgency and gravity of the needs presented. A necessity is something basic that is required in order to live, while a comfort is something that is not really needed but can make our lives easier and more enjoyable. Luxuries are those that we can totally do without and are categorized because of their opulence. For instance, food is a necessity, while fast food is a comfort and gourmet food and delicacies can be considered luxuries.
Although the definition of necessity, comfort, and luxury technically remains the same, what people can categorize as being a part of those three have evolved over time. Certainly, the way and standard of living ten years ago are very different from the present. This is due to modern technology and the inevitable changes it brings to the people who are exposed to it. What was largely inaccessible and totally not available back then are readily available now. In fact, these things are made so accessible that they can now be placed under the category of comfort and some would even call them a necessity. Thus, what was considered a luxury before, because of inaccessibility or the high price that comes with the new invention, can now be considered a necessity.
With the advent of modern technology comes a lot of electronic gadgets and innovations that have become necessities, where before they cannot even be considered luxuries because they were simply not yet invented. Modern technology has presented the people with a way of living that is infinitely easier and more comfortable. A prime example is the microwave oven. Before, housewives make just the right serving for the family so as not to waste the extra food. Otherwise, they would need to reheat the leftovers on the stove, which takes a lot of time and effort.
