Most of us have heard about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and the affects it has on military personnel during wartime. A lesser known term is known as Rape Trauma Syndrome.

PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is noted as a range of behaviors and feelings often experienced by a person who has been physically and/or emotionally harmed.

Many of the signs that appear, and are shared by victims, are violent crimes, accidents, physical assault, sexual assault, or those who have had experiences where trust was violated and/or power removed.

The signs from PTSD and RTS that may show up as insomnia are the following:

nightmares or flashbacks
ongoing sleeping and eating disturbances
feelings of fear or terror
self-blame
suicidal thoughts
dreams, nightmares, and recovered memories
phobias

How is it treated?

Immediate counseling from a trusted friend or professional psychologist should be considered the first line of defense. Also, this should be someone who is trained to handle very sensitive issues like this. A professional can help you change, so that the event no longer defines who you are, and can help eliminate the destructive daily behaviors that keep you from getting sleep.

You should be able to find an appropriate counselor for any of the symptoms shown above. Even though the symptoms of "Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder" and "Rape Trauma Syndrome" are treatable, the underlying pain may continue for many years. Some may never overcome the memories of the trauma they have sustained. Even with that, counseling can relieve some of the anxieties associated with these issues.
