Getting on the Internet in Buenos Aires

Like most metropolitan cities in Europe, Buenos Aires has tons of internet cafes that offer a high speed internet connection for a low price. For an average price about 2 pesos (less than a dollar) per hour internet cafes (called Locutorios) allow foreigners or locals an inexpensive entry fee to jump on the world wide web.

The fact is that internet access is pervasive in most of South America's large cities, so keeping in touch with your family back home does not have to be an ordeal. In Buenos Aires particularly, these per hour internet cafes abound. In the downtown area of Buenos Aires you can find one every few blocks, and there are always computers available.

It's true that a lot of the computer are a little out of date, but for simple things like email, IMing, web surfing, and uploading pictures, they are more than enough. In fact, I was able to work as a travel writer and submit my articles from Buenos Aires without ever having to own a computer.

Many internet cafes have headsets for customers to use when speaking over free internet phone services like Skype (check out Skype at Skype.com). This is a great way for backpackers and budget travelers to save some money on phone calls. Most internet cafes are not really cafes at all, but look more like your good all high-school computer lab. Some, however, also have a small selection of food and drinks, and others may offer separate booths for people to use for phone calls.
