Does your dining room table get used less frequently than your treadmill? Are nightly dinners where the family sits and eats...together, a rare occurrence? Most of us probably wish we had more family dinners together, but oftentimes schedules conflict and life just seems to get in the way of this. If your family shuns the dining room even when they're home for a meal, however, you may have a problem with an easy fix. You may just need a new dining room set.

Sounds way too simple, huh? If your dining room furniture is old and rundown, with a cracking finish and creaky, uncomfortable chairs, you may have a dining room where no one wants to be. Some new dining room furniture can infuse life into your dining room, making it the great gathering place it once was. There are tons of styles and designs out there to suit any taste, from the staunchest of traditionalists, to those on the more contemporary side of the spectrum, your new dining room set awaits.

When looking for new dining room furniture, the obvious factors to consider are the size of your family and the size of your dining room. For smaller families a table with extenders or a leaf is an ideal choice because of the flexibility it gives you. A four seater is no good if it's your turn to host Thanksgiving, but having a large eight or ten person table take up space when you have just three or four immediate family members also makes no sense. Leafs and extensions can be easily stored away for use when needed, some even store within the table itself.

The next thing to consider is what style you're going for and what finish, or color is best for your dining room. There are tons of new dining room sets with a traditional look, if that's your taste. There's no need to scour antique shops and spend a small fortune on a dining room set that's not going to last. New furniture is built better and stronger than most older pieces and will hold up better under daily use (and abuse). The finish is also an important factor to consider. A light, pale tone can open up smaller dining rooms, while a rich dark finish is great for a more formal look.
