Egyptian Cotton Sheets - Feel The Difference

When you hear the words Egyptian cotton sheets, comfort and luxury are usually the first things to accompany them. While this is a true notion, many people do not understand why there is a difference between regular cotton sheets and 100 percent Egyptian cotton sheets. The difference is found in where and how the cotton is grown. With regular sheets that can still claim to be 100 percent cotton, the cotton plant is harvested much earlier so the staple, or fiber length, is much shorter. On the microscopic level, more points can be seen coming through the fabric. You can feel this when you rub your hands along a sheet, but you cannot see it with the naked eye.

The long staple of Egyptian cotton is what makes it more expensive. The cotton must be allowed to grow longer, taking more time and leading to a price increase in the product. Also, when the cotton is spun, the threads are thinner yet stronger than in traditional cotton, making the fabric breathable while still maintaining its lasting strength. This also leads to naturally higher thread count, which is the number of threads per square inch. This used to be the only thing shoppers looked for in quality bedding. Clearly, it is a factor of strength, but whether the cotton was harvested early or not makes the biggest noticeable difference in the smoothness on the skin. Separate Egyptian cotton sheets have differing thread counts. The higher the count, the greater the quality will be.

Egyptian cotton is called such because it is grown in Egypt. Cotton grown in fields there produces less lint, leading to the fact that Egyptian cotton sheets will not pill after repeated washings. A word of caution when purchasing cotton sheets is that "cotton rich" does not mean 100 percent cotton. In fact, it can be a devious way for manufacturers to hide the fact that there is actually very little cotton in the product. If it says does not say 100 percent cotton, you can make no assumptions.

Anyone who has slept on Egyptian cotton sheets can vouch for the difference they feel when compared to regular cotton. It used to be that only the wealthiest patrons of high end bedding stores could afford Egyptian cotton sheets, but now, as harvesting techniques improve, prices are much more reasonable. Anyone can enjoy the luxury that is Egyptian cotton with just a little more cash. See what colors and thread counts are available today at http://www.allinthebedding.com.
