The pursuit of performance is one thing, the attainment of success is another. At the end of the day hopefully you will have achieved what you have worked towards. But what, when and how do you analyse your performance as you pursue these goals?

Last year we discussed: Is your rate of improvement and growth more than, equal too, or less than that of the environment that you operate in? You see if you are going to need to be better than the opposition and the opposition can be whatever you want it to be, then you will need to have some orientation as to how fast the opposition continues to grow and develop. You will also require a corresponding technique to measure your own rate of growth and development.

As we have previously discussed the need to improve and grow oneself is totally a personal desire. So to, is the rate of desired improvement and growth. If you are trying to stay on top of the pile or in front of the rest of the tribe, then you had better have a faster rate of improvement than they.

If we take time to look at any pursuit of performance there is always some procedure for analysing the performance of all involved. Coaches understand that success and failure is pretty much part and parcel of the pursuit of sporting performance. Of course their is a huge importance placed on gaining that success.

As at the end of the day the existence of the organisation is dependant upon a positive win loss record. Also the sports people themself are judged by their individual and team success. And then the ongoing employment opportunities for the coach is dependant upon the success of the individual or team they are associated with.

However, even with all of that and regardless of whether there is success or failure, sports coaches realise and each day personally adhere to the importance of performance analysis. These days in sport the use of video analysis and statistics
covers most areas of individual and team performance.

As in sport there are in business, people that are specifically employed to monitor areas of performance. They take this raw data and mould it into some type of analysis that is then put forward to show how, why and where the outcomes and performances have been achieved.

For the area of performance analysis to fully benefit those whose performances are being analysed, there has to be an understanding that performance analysis is an intricate part of ongoing improvement and growth for the individual, the team and the organisation.
However unfortunately in some cases, analysis is looked upon as a case of big brother watching our every move.

Now in some cases this can be quite understandable. If every move you make is being recorded and then fed back to you in an unpleasant and dictatorial manner, then it will be hard if not impossible to see the benefits of performance analysis.

But if that information is delivered in the correct manner then the advantages in the information that is being presented will truly be realised. At the end of the day any information that gives us insight to not only what we have done but how, will
also allow us to take that information and further develop our understanding, knowledge and hopefully growth and success.

So now we get to you. If you have taken the time to subscribe to TPC and read these articles then you are a person that is looking for insight and information to help you grow and succeed in your chosen field. Now my question to you at this stage is how this growth will take place and then how will you analyse your pursuit and eventual success?

I would hope that by now you have your goals outlined. Remember our three part strategy for effective goal setting. Outcome (What) Process (How) Reason (Why). It is imperative that you cover all three areas as you outline your goals, how it is you will achieve them and why it is you are going to pursue these goals.

With that being said and answering the first part of my question, we then must look at the second part of the question and that is "How will you analyse your performance" both process and outcome?

As you go about answering this question as it relates to you and your ongoing growth and performance achievement, I would say to you don't try to reinvent the wheel. There is without doubt enough suitable and relevant methodology of performance
analysis covering a myriad of pursuits.

So rather than try and come up with something new, look at some of the methods that sports, business and education are using to analyse performance. Know them, understand them and as certain their relevance to what you are pursuing. Then think
through how you can upgrade these concepts and how you can personalise them to suit you individual performance pursuits.
