If you have been diagnosed with diverticular disease or you suspect you may have the condition, what natural actions can you take to relieve the symptoms?

Taking the following steps may help with diverticular disease:

1. Taking these supplements may help:

• B-complex
• Folic acid
• Muti-vitamins and minerals

2. Alternating fibre supplements such as:
• Psyllium
• Pectin
• Guar gum
• Bran
• Sterculia
• Ispaghula

to stimulate bowel function.

3. Drink plenty of water with the fibre supplements

4. Taking a probiotic supplement to replenish the friendly bacteria within the colon and/or colloidal silicol gel and/or aloe vera juice to soothe the colon.

5. Using the herbs, slippery elm in a tea form and marshmallow root, can help with the symptoms of diverticular disease.

6. Changing your diet and lifestyle can reduce the symptoms of diverticular disease; keeping to a diet which is high in fibre will help.

7. Consume plenty of whole grains such as:
• Beans
• Brown rice
• Fruit (apples are good)
• Oats
• Vegetables

Build this fibre content up over many weeks to enable your body to get used to the increase in fibre.

8. Drink at least a litre of mineral water per day to help to avoid constipation.

9. Cut down on processed, packaged and fast foods, try to avoid them as much as possible.

10. If you are a smoker, try and give up, as smoking tends to make the symptoms of diverticular disease worst.

11. Try to exercise more as this will help to tone up the muscle within the colon.

12. Try to cut down on your caffeine consumption as caffeine will tend to irritate the colon making the symptoms of diverticular disease worst.

13. Foods with seeds in them and nuts can get caught in the diverticula which can cause infection and inflammation making the symptoms worst, it is best to avoid, cut down or make sure that you fully chew these types of foods.

14. Cut down on refined carbohydrates such as white bread and white rice.
