The material that one sends to a company that provides self storage should be packed properly and care should be taken that it does not deteriorate. Otherwise the very purpose of storing these articles is lost. The first thing that one must do is to pack the articles in cardboard or wooden boxes. If the items are fragile then it is necessary to line the boxes with some padding material like foam, cloth, cotton or paper before placing the items in them. If you provide a protective covering of any kind of specialized material, it can also be a good option for electronic and glass items.

Too much material should not be packed into a single box. It is always better to distribute the load between two or more boxes before sending it for self storage . It is always not advisable to load a single box to its maximum capacity as though the box might appear strong, it might not be able to bear the weight. There are chances of the box giving in later on and hence failing the entire purpose of packaging. So it is very important to keep a note of the kind of box that is being used.

After packing the box it is always advisable to write the contents of the box and the exact type of room it is to be put in, on each and every side of the box. The supervisors or caretakers of the company providing the facility to store the boxes can be consulted if one does not know what type of self storage room and what type of conditions are most appropriate for storing the contents of the box. It is always better to jot down the contents on all sides of the box because one cannot be sure of which side one might be facing and have difficulty in trying to figure out the contents later when accessing the box in the storehouse.

One should be very careful while packing books, paper stuff and clothes because though they might appear light and small in size, but they can really make a box heavy if packed together. It is always better to distribute the load as much as possible when it comes to these items. In fact books can be placed in small numbers along with other items like cutlery electronic items etc. in the self storage rather than placing them in a single lot in a box. It will keep the box light and hence make accessing the stuff within it easy. By packing in plastic bags one can keep the packed material free of moisture or getting damp in case it rains during transportation.

In the case of glass items or electronic goods it is always better to pack each and every item separately in some protective covering within the box because it might so happen that during transportation the individual items in the box might bang against each other and hence break or damage each other. Moreover, later access of these items from the self storage becomes an easy process if the items are individually packed.

Wooden items should always be given a protective covering of wood varnish before packing. The varnish should be applied first and allowed to dry on the wooden surface. Then the item should be packed. Varnishing the wooden item will protect it from moisture.
