A Different Approach To Baby Sitting Services

The term "baby-sit" was first registered in common language in 1937. This word came into being as a result of the act of the caretaker "sitting with" the baby in another room, while the parents were socializing or busy in other ways. Most baby sitters today, unlike those in the past, try to get professional qualifications and teach themselves or equip themselves to do better justice to the job.

Security reasons and concern for the child in an age of insecurities have prompted parents to opt for professional organizations where the sitters are more professional about their work and are well equipped to handle an emergency situation. Rules and regulations and intervention on the part of State bodies in various countries have ensured rights and duties both on the part of the sitter as well as the parents.

In England CAS or Childcare Approval Scheme has become effective since April 2005, under contract to Department for Education & Skills. This scheme is operated on a recovery of cost basis charging the carers who have applied for consent. The approval fee covers the cost of Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure check, a manned helpline, maintenance of the website, the process of appeal and most administrative costs, VAT inclusive.

New rules suggest that babysitters should be over 16 years of age and that parents should look for at least two references and contact these references before employing someone. Most government agencies also recommend that parents make a complete risk assessment as well as go through all possible eventualities before leaving or entrusting their children to a known or unknown babysitter.

A more professional approach to baby sitting has resulted in much relief for parents with disabled children. The extra care and professional help needed for taking care of such children is available today. Parents may not be able to use a regular babysitter for their disabled children. For cases such as these, "respite" services are available. Some of these programs provide babysitting and childcare services for parents whose children are severely disabled. Try checking with your local health department or other private organizations, to find out if respite services are available in your locality.

With the advent of professional companies in this line today baby sitters offer much more than the traditional 'sitting' services. Total care packages are now available for children - for their entertainment, safekeeping, outings, school drop and pickup, help with homework, etc.
