You will find that a lot of items that are sent through the post these days or are put into storage will be packed carefully to make sure that the contents of the package are not damaged. One of the main things that is used to give this protection is bubble wrap but were did this everyday product actually originate from? We have given a brief outline on where, when and how the idea became a worldwide product.
Similar to so many other inventions, the creation of this popular cushioning came about pretty much by accident. Two Americans were actually trying to create a new type of wallpaper that consisted of a plastic top layer with a paper base layer. When their attempts ultimately failed, the by product that came out of it was the basis of what started bubble wrap. They realised that it could be very useful to provide cushioning so started producing it properly in 1960. Since these humble and some would say fortunate beginnings, the product become an international hit and is used on a daily basis to provide protection for a wide range of goods.
The wrapping is usually made from clear plastic sheets of polythene and consists of rows of air bubbles that provide the cushioning. They can be purchased in a variety of sizes from small sheets to huge rolls and you can also get a range of different sized bubbles on the sheets. The different sizes can be suitable for different needs with bigger bubbles being perfect for larger items.
Bubble wrap is now used by companies and everyday consumers all around the world and provides a perfect solution for your packaging and storage needs. Coming from a small garage in America in the late 1950's to the majority of households in the present time is no mean feat and its popularity is only added to by the fact you can get the joy from popping each little air pocket!
