How to Use Ezine Ads to Build Your List

Ezine ads are advertisements that are placed in online newsletters or ezines for the purpose of generating revenue for the list owner. The advantage to you, in placing the ads, is that you are marketing to people who subscribe to online newsletters, and do not opt out. You may think, well how do you know they do not opt out? They are still on the list! I know that seems simple, but think about this. If you run a PPC campaign and you are targeting the average public for leads, you will have a considerable opt out rate. That can decrease the size of your list nearly as fast as you are building it, if you aren't careful.

But when you market to existing ezine subscribers, the ones that opt in to your list are already proven subscribers, proven readers, and they do not generally tend to opt out. Now obviously you must provide a quality mailing or they will leave because they are not getting any value from your mailing, but they generally will not opt out simply because they are getting too much mail.

Simply go to the ezines, inquire about advertising rates, and select a few smaller ezines and purchase a few small ads. Do not run solo ads until you have tested your ad script first. If they won't opt in to your list from a quarter page ad, they will not from a full page ad either. Now you will get more subscribers with a full page ad, but if the smaller ad doesn't pay for itself, the larger one generally won't either.

Since you are building a list and not trying to sell something right off the bat to the ezine subscribers, you can generally get a pretty decent response rate by offering a free report to new subscribers. One thing with ezine advertising is that because they are not free, the people advertising are often trying to recoup their entire investment with the responses from the ad. Which is fine. But the good thing for you and me is that the readers are used to reading sales ads, directing them to sales letters. Imagine if they come across your ad that does not sell them, ask for money, or anything of the like. It will be like a breath of fresh air. So take advantage of it. Offer them a free gift. They will accept your free gift, and you will have a new subscriber.

So how should the ad be written?

As with all advertising, the headline is incredibly important. You must write a headline that grabs the ezine reader and radically compels him to click on your link. Once again, a free report can work wonders in this form of advertising.

For example: Free Report Offers Brand New Method of…..

Next, you will have to write some script about your free report. List a few of the things they will discover or learn in your free report, and offer several opportunities to click over to your squeeze page. I am a believer in shorter script, but as long as you give them ample opportunity to click, then a longer script can work also. Remember, all you are looking for here is the click so you can gain the subscriber; you are not selling them anything in this ad.

A sample ezine ad for a free report on list building might read like this:

Notice that I keep the script brief and extremely targeted. Remember, I am not selling anything, I simply want the opt in.

As always, be sure to test everything you do. Some ezines are going to pull much better than others. Some of the ad script you write will pull much better than others. But the only way you will ever know for sure what pulls and what doesn't is if you develop the habit of testing everything you do.
