You have likely seen commercials on TV or seen ads for debt consolidation, or even seen it with some of the many flyers you get in your bills, but have you ever wondered what debt consolidation really is and how it could be a benefit to you?

Debt consolidation is becoming more and more popular as prices continue to rise, especially at the gas pumps, and it appears things will continue to go in that direction. Unfortunately, most people's paychecks are not keeping up with the rising prices and rising cost of goods and services at nearly the same rate, so it is just a matter of time before the inevitable happens - you find yourself WAY behind in your bills.

In its simplest form, debt consolidation is a process whereby the consumer takes all of his bills, like credit cards and loan payments, and turns them over to a debt consolidation services company. What the company does is to work with your creditors to lower your payments, lower your interest rate which is probably sky-high anyway, and frequently they are also able to get late fees waived.

The goal of debt consolidation is to give you the financial breathing room you need. It is not bankruptcy and it is not a loan. In other words, the debt consolidation service does not pay off your bills nor do they give you a loan. But after working with your creditors, you will then pay them a single lump sum payment every month, which they will take and distribute to each of your creditors, making at least the minimum payment that is required in that month.

Regarding the financial breathing room, this is yet another great aspect of debt consolidation, because your payments are lowered. Before getting started with the debt consolidation company, say for example that you were spending $2500 each month to make just the minimum payments on your bills. After working with the company, you find that your payment to them each month is now only $1500, perhaps even less. This was just an example, sometimes the amount is even less, but you get the idea.

Now a word of caution. You need to make sure that you make that payment to the debt consolidation service each month, because if you don't, then they will not make the payments to your creditors either, and that is only going to put you in a worse situation than you are in now. The other thing to keep in mind is that you may get a feeling of "euphoria" about being "so much less in debt" and be tempted to go out on a spending binge. Don't do it! You are in exactly as much debt as you were before, but the difference is that now it is under control, whereas before it was out of control.

Debt consolidation is also a great option for taking care of student loans that you are paying back. The cost of your college education was astronomical and you are now paying back your student loans as well as your other bills as you get started on your career, so debt consolidation can be a great option to take a lot of financial stress off your shoulders.

The bottom line is that debt consolidation is a very viable option that you should consider, and it is a much better option than bankruptcy, which has many long term negative effects on you.
