Depression is a very serious condition that a lot of people suffer from, but few understand. When a black cloud of despair lands and doesn't seem to want to go away, the person suffering might feel there's nothing out there that can possibly help, but the reality is there are some effective means to combat this condition. Depression medication is one such aid that can really assist in the process.

While there are many different types of depression medication options, they all seek to do a few things. These include control or elimination of the symptoms of depression, lifting the cloud enough so the root causes can be identified and also regulating a person enough that everyday life is no longer impacted. Which medication options and what other treatments to go along with them will vary depending on the person in question and their particular case of depression.

Since many depression medication options can come along with some pretty harsh side effects, it's important to take these under medical advice only. Self-treating depression is never a good route to go. Some of the more common side effects across the board for these drugs include stomach issues, weight gain or loss, headaches and so on. They can even include loss of sexual desire.

The major types of depression medication include Tricyclic, SSRI and MAOI antidepressants. Tricyclic drugs include such names as Elavil and Vivactil. This form of antidepressant has such side effects as anxiety, dry mouth, constipation, weight gain and so on. Paxil, Zoloft and Prozac are SSRI type antidepressants. These tend to present with some common side effects that include headaches and stomach problems. Common MAOI drugs include Parnate and Nardil. The side effects of these can include such things as dizziness, heartbeat changes and more.

While not everyone who takes a particular depression medication will experience one of the side effects, it's important for patients to be familiar with the potential issues that could arise. It's also important to understand what interactions could cause problems. For example, alcohol might not be a good idea for some to take in conjunction with these medications and sometimes certain foods or over-the-counter medications can cause problems, too.

Depression medication can be an important component in helping a person deal with the grips of this condition. By clearing the mind and allowing a person to work on the root cause or causes for the condition, these medications can be invaluable. They, however, should not be taken lightly.
