With all the spam filters out there it's understandable why many internet marketers are just happy that their email gets thru. Yes getting your email thru the maze of protection is an accomplishment. But you can't stop there. An email marketing campaign is going to be one of the most powerful weapons in your internet marketing business. So it is important to go the extra mile to guarantee its effectiveness.

Of course it should go without saying that the best way to make sure your online email marketing reaches its target audience is to avoid any blatant advertising that would trigger a spam mail filter. This not only includes sales pitches in the subject line but also making outrageous claims about a product or service in the body of the email. .

This may seem unfair to many internet business owners and to a large degree it is. You send out one email advertising your product and recipients cry foul or in this case spam. Unfortunately that's the nature of online email marketing. Your best bet is to make sure you are providing useful information and realistic guarantees. Provide a link to the product website and let the sales page do the selling.

In the meantime there are other things you can do to make sure you are getting the most out of your email marketing campaign:

1. Customize

When marketing by email, some people have a tendency to aim their promotions at the all inclusive and extremely elusive general audience. The thinking goes, if they send their email out to thousands of prospects that even if only a few people respond, they will be able to generate leads and sales. Anything is possible but this is not very effective.

Your best bet is targeted email marketing. Find the audience for your product. It maybe less than several thousand but the chances are your response rate will be higher since these people are already interested in your offer before they see it. This also makes it easier for you to customize your email marketing campaign.

2. Follow Up

You are running an internet marketing promotion that you feel people would find interesting. And indeed they do. Now what? Follow up to find out exactly how much interest. You could send out another email but the best method is to contact your potential customers by phone or snail mail. Ask them do they have any questions about the promotion. Invite them to a conference call or webinar to get more information. If you do contact them by phone do not turn into a telemarketer and start pressuring them to buy your product. Use this time to forge a relationship with your prospects.

3. Prepare for Success

Many online business owners expect to be successful. That's a great mind set to have. However they make the mistake of setting up their email marketing campaign without planning for the increase in customers and sales. This is critical. Few things irritate customers more than having to wait an excessive amount of time for a product or service.
If you say immediately than you must deliver immediately. Not preparing for success is the kind of blunder which can get people to unsubscribe from your email marketing list and seek out your competition.

Because of spam and even legitimate advertising, the days of wide open online email marketing are over. However you can still operate an effective email marketing campaign by finding your target audience, doing proper follow up and being ready to deliver to your prospects. Following these steps can only lead to more customers and more sales.
