Christmas Gifts for Newlyweds
Well, chances are they did not receive everything on their gift registries, so that is a good place to fall back on. And since they are just starting out as a couple, they probably have not accumulated a lot in the way of Christmas decorations such as ornaments, centerpieces, and other seasonal knick-knacks. Other ideas are:
Engraved or monogrammed gifts are always appreciated any time of the year such as linens, crystal, or personal gifts like jewelry boxes, key chains, or money clips.
Turn a scrapbook into a 12-month binder that includes pocket folders and a calendar page for each month. Then write down important dates such as birthdays, anniversaries, and other family events. Add some generic greeting cards and a sheet of stamps as a final touch.
Tickets to a local play or sporting event that are tucked into a stocking or box of homemade goodies (see "Gifts from the Hearth and Heart" article) are exciting to receive. Of course, gift cards to area restaurants are always welcome, too.
Many couples both work full-time and do not have time for home cooked meals during the week. Offer to prepare them one meal a week for a month or make-ahead meals that can be frozen and reheated when needed. Another alternative is a gift certificate to a meal assembly kitchen such as Super Suppers or My Girlfriend's Kitchen. If you really want to splurge, arrange to have a Personal Chef (see the yellow pages) make a week's worth of meals.
A gift picnic basket can be enjoyed any time of the year, especially while snuggling up together in front of the fireplace or TV. You can purchase gift picnic baskets with all the trimmings from Bed, Bath & Beyond or Linens & Things for around $50. Or make one up yourself to include a bottle of wine, a fancy opener and glasses, cloth napkins, plastic ware, utensils, and non-perishable edibles.
When setting up house the walls usually have the least significance because they are not considered a necessity like a couch and bed are. So, if you are familiar with the couple's decorating tastes, a gift of artwork is a thoughtful gift. This could be an original painting, a limited edition print, or framed poster of a honeymoon spot or favorite movie.
Finally, if the couple is fortunate enough to really have it all, share the love by making a donation in their name to a favorite charity.
