Kopping Out - The Liverpool Saga

So, another season has pretty much come and gone for Liverpool and we're only just into January as I write. Ruthlessly thrown out of both domestic cup competitions by the Arsenal and facing a similar treatment from Barcelona in the Champions League, it's not looking too bright for the Reds.

They've got some fantastic players and a manager I truly believe can take them to where they want to be. But the first step on the road to the promise land is the Premiership and Benitez simply isn't making it a priority. He needs to consistently be putting out his best eleven and putting the pressure on the top two to really perform. I really believe that if they did this just for one season, they'd be right up there in the shake up, and not lagging ten points behind the pace.

In Steven Gerrard they have a proven world class performer who can turn games in a heartbeat and someone they can build a team around. I think the Spanish revolution has added some significant quality alongside Gerrard - most notably in the form of Xavi Alonso who has one of the best passing ranges I've seen in a long time. They've also got some excellent consistency through players like Carragher, Finnan and Riise and in my opinion, these players are up there with the very best performers on their day.

The problem the Anfield team have is in their team selection, and its constant rotation. I think even their most faithful fans would agree that the majority of the time- they simply don't have the strength in depth to be rotating against Premiership sides who field their strongest team.

All of this being said, I really think they're heading in the right direction and I can see them lifting the Premiership trophy in the next two or three seasons.
