A Mother's Sacrifice

Looking back through time childhood memories flood my thoughts. No matter the effort, the collection of fun things we did, willingly and unwillingly is mind boggling. It is almost impossible to begin, as the starting line would have to go all the way back to first memories.

We were real drama kings back then; my Mom and Dad had a Kodak movie camera with a giant light bar on top. There were six, one hundred and fifty watt bulbs on that thing. The lights were so bright we saw white spots before our eyes for a long time after the camera was turned off. We loved that moment of acting crazy and doing stunts before the camera. I still have those movies, they are stashed if a safe place where no one can see them.

We had dozens of cousins running around the house, all our relatives visited each other because money was short and it was an inexpensive form of entertainment. In retrospect I think all those relatives really needed to keep the bond strong, a real family.

In our family, our mom was a woman who had big dreams for her children. It was our mom who made us play musical instruments, accordian and piano for me. Only mom could care that much, she made sure that we understood the sweet language of music. I really did not like taking music lessons, but, I still play a variety of musical instruments to this day. I am eternally grateful to my mom for that.

During the summer months when school was out, we had to read a whole book each day, then, write a book report on it before we could go out and play. We did not need any speed reading courses back then; we read plenty fast so we could play before sun down. I have never stopped reading, it is my passion.

Making three meals per day, cooking in the old fashion way, mom was stuffing us with the best food. We are all fat in our old age, a remnant of the mighty fine cuisine we could not stop eating back then. I can't stop eating it now, and we are all good cooks.

We had to go through the personal hygiene inspection everyday. Mom checked our ears and teeth, combing our hair. Then the horror of horrors, she would wet a napkin with her tongue and wipe the food off our side of our mouths, yech! We just screamed when she would do that. In my later years I have found that mothers do that very same thing even now, and their kids scream just like us.

Since we were four boys, we were kids who liked to get dirty. I am fairly sure that after so many years and so many kids my mom had to give up trying to keep us clean. There was no way to stop the dirt from attracting itself to our clothes. Poor mom, she tried so hard to keep her boys presentable, remember that word?

As I have the time to day dream back to those times of our youth, I could only thank my mom for being such a strong soldier. She was tough, she was concerned for our future, and she worried about our education and appearance. We are lucky to have such a blessing as our mom. My brothers are a fairly intelligent brood, although I may have missed out on some of those enlightening moments. Sometimes, it seems that way to me. Three out of four isn't bad though.

Tomorrow is my mother's birthday and I wanted to tell her in the way which is most important to her, that, we are capable of communicating, loving, caring, understanding the world we live in, and, dealing with our problems.

The education that our parents provided for us was an extreme sacrifice for them, financially and physically. Everything Mom and Dad did for us, at a cost to all the comforts and conveniences they might have had, but, for their love of their boys, they made a very large contribution to the future of their sons.

Mom, while I know that Dad was a partner in our future, this really isn't about him right now, it is all about you. I love you and humbly thank you for the love and sacrifice you gave all of your life. Happy Birthday and Thank You So Much.
