Music producers and record producers perform an important function behind the scenes, and the public seldom sees their presence except when the producer is actively guiding the musician's career. Most people would be surprised to learn that music producers today will often supervise the actual music recording session and even mix and master their own productions. Today's music producer plays a much broader role in the music production process than in the past.

While a musician may prefer to have complete artistic control over his or her career, an upcoming artist would be wise to seek the expertise of a music producer to supervise the selection and arrangement of music. An involved music producer may oversee the entire recording process, as well as working to "create an image" for the artist. The producer will often mentor the artist, helping to select the cover art for the musical piece, and even suggesting lyrics and melodies that will help market the album.

Music producers and music production companies act as liaisons between the artist and his record label, or an artist and his manager. Primarily, the producer is in the business of developing raw talent and signing new musicians to production contracts. In guiding the artist's career, a producer will carefully select just the right company to produce the artists' works. In short, a good music producer can help the professional musician's career to grow and thrive.

Today's musicians and music producers need not be allied with a production company. The advent of audio production computer software has allowed amateurs and professionals alike to create professional recordings without the help of engineers or technicians. Modern music software allows the artist to record their own music and enjoy complete artistic control, without outside influences. But, is that the best scenario for every musician? Just because a band can make their own recordings in a home studio on a PC or laptop computer does not mean they should eschew the services of a music producer. Bad decisions can quickly make or break a musical career. The upcoming artist should at least consider contacting a professional music producer because they have the experience and background needed to help make sensible decisions for a lifelong career in music.
