When traveling overseas from the United States, you will find it handy to print out a length conversion table, or utilize the speed of a length conversion calculator. With only three exceptions, every country in the world uses the metric system, so in everyday transactions that you will have while traveling, you will find that it is helpful to know a little bit about metric conversion so that you can understand and use metric lengths in a more cognizant manner on your trip abroad.

A length conversion table is a chart that you can find online and print out. It will show the conversions from meters to feet, for example, and list from one to as many table pages you wish to print. A length conversion table is handy to keep in your coat pocket or purse, so you can refer to it whenever you wish.

This metric conversion can also be performed on a length conversion calculator. These handy devices are found online or within hand-held calculators, and you simply pick the length conversion you wish to make, type in the number you want converted, and then stand back while the calculator does the math for you in record speed. For online conversion calculators you will, of course, need Internet access, so you will want to consider that as you travel.

Of course, all of the length conversion tables and calculators are based on mathematical conversion formulas. The metric system is based on base ten. This means that it is often quite easy to do mental math concerning length conversion, because you are only adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing the number of units by ten to get the answers you need.

With regard to length, there are some metric terms you will want to know. A meter is similar to our yard, while a centimeter is one one-hundredth of a meter, and a millimeter is one one-thousandth of a meter. On the longer end of the length spectrum, length is measured in kilometers, which is equal to one thousand meters.

Knowing a little bit about length conversion can make you more comfortable when you are out shopping, taking measurements, walking between or calculating map distances, or driving a car on your trip abroad. When you know that the metric system is based on the number ten, the math conversions become fairly easy, but when they are not, you can use a conversion table or calculator instead.
