Leah Purcell and the Story of Her Life

The ABC television networks showed in "Australian Story" a documentary titled "Queen Leah". This film is about an Aboriginal woman Leah Purcell who had a very difficult life. The documentary describes her life with fragments of her self-narration. The audience is able to see her, they feel with her and embrace together with Leah the changes that have happened in her life. This is intensified through the documentaries applying of scenes from Leah's solo, autobiography "Box the Pony", that is used in addition to Leah's background narration of the domestic violence and alcoholism that she suffered. Images of T.A.B's and a periodic image of a single schooner full of beer broaden the significance alcohol played in Leah's life. The camera flicks between these images and Leah in "Box the Pony" in very emotional scenes connecting the alcohol with the pain depicted in "Box and Pony" and back to the person Leah has become in spite of all misfortunes in her life.

Through the application of visual footage of her performing in different environments, from the days on Police Rescue to the part in the Australian film that has been shot recently and is titled Lantana, Leah investigates the fulfillment of her dreams and the search of her career. This shows the discrete changes that have happened between Leah's running life and her distracted youthful world, and therefore reveals the change that has happened within her. Leah Purcell is an example of few people who faced such terrible situations as she had, but managed to cope with them, and have put in order their lives and what is more important their inner world. Now Leah Purcell is well-known to many people whom the story of her life helps to live and cope with their problems.
