Fun in the Sun: Skincare in the Summer

Summer is here. People can't wait to get outdoors - especially those who suffer through dismal Midwest winters. But before venturing out, consider these tips for proper skincare in the summer.

As with many things in life, it's easy to become lackadaisical about proper skincare when it often counts the most. Dermatologists point out how easy it is not to take the time to guard skin from ultraviolet radiation. While we're eager to spend billions of dollars a year on makeup and skincare products, we're often careless about the use of sunscreen. But it's also important to give some thought to one's skincare regimen. In addition to changing a wardrobe for the warmer summer months, it's also necessary to change one's skincare regimen. While turning to a heavier sunscreen during the summer months, skin calls for lighter makeup and moisturizer. Other changes are dependent on skin type and summer activities.

Oily Skin

Those with oily skin may need to increase the strength of their cleaners and nix the use of moisturizer. Individuals taking medication for acne should consult their dermatologist as more sweat can often lead to more breakouts. Some antibiotics used for acne may also leave skin more susceptible to burning under sunlight. One antibiotic in particular, doxycycline, makes skin so sensitive to the sun's rays it can cause severe burning.

But most importantly, don't skip the sunscreen. For someone concerned about breakouts with the use of sunscreen, choose noncomedogenic sunscreens that won't cause breakouts. Gel-formulated sunscreens as opposed to creamy sunscreens are also a good choice for acne-prone skin.

Dry Skin

Summer is perhaps the best time of year for those with dry skin. During the warmer months, skin tends to feel less dry and itchy. Switch to a gentle cleanser and less moisturizer during the summer.

Summer Activities

Pay special attention to skin after summer activities, such as sports or swimming. Clean skin after swimming to rid it of chlorine or other chemicals. Follow with a light moisturizer as chlorine tends to dry skin out. Working out can also produce its own harmful effects to skin, so make sure to wash your face using a non-soap cleanser. Try to avoid face washing more than three times per day.

Wearing makeup can also be a summer skincare concern for those with acne. However, it's fine to wear makeup during the summer months. Just choose noncomedogenic makeup for those with acne-prone skin. Powders or sheer makeup wear well during the summer months. Also choose a foundation with extra protection from ultraviolet rays.

Following are daily skincare habits needed to keep skin beautiful - not just in summer, but all year long.:

- Protect lips by wearing lipstick or lip balm with an SPF of 15 or higher.

- Use body lotion with SPF, in addition to sunscreen.

- Protect your scalp by wearing a hat and applying sunscreen to any exposed parts.

- Drink plenty of water every day

- Eat a healthy diet with fruits, vegetables and leafy greens. Good nutrition is the basic building block of healthy skin.

- Get a professional facial using mineral essentials cleansers to deep cleanse skin at least four times a year, as the seasons change. Every four to six weeks is ideal.

- Avoid using soap and invest in quality products made for your skin type.

- Wear a quality, high SPF sunscreen, even on cloudy days and in winter. Sun damage is the single most important cause of premature aging.

- Use sunscreen on exposed areas such as the back of the hands, neck and chest. They are often the first places to show signs of aging.

- Quit skin-damaging habits such as smoking, excessive drinking and tanning booths.
