If you are looking for a hobby that can involve a little bit of technical work but still be quite fun then model rockets may be right up your alley. There can be no greater joy than to watch a model rocket that you have built take off and soar into the skies. If only the launches would go off without a hitch everything would be mostly perfect. Sadly enough this is hardly ever the case.
There are many times you will find yourself out in the field needing to do repairs of one sort or another. When this is so, would you rather tote a great big tool box full of unnecessary tools around? Of course you wouldn't. A small tool box that you can easily carry out to the range is ideal for model racketeers. Such a box is often referred to as a range box.
To put together a range box you will just need to gather a few of the right tools and supplies together and place them in a decent container. The container you use for your range box should be plastic so that it will not rust. A tackle box for fishing can make a great range box. You will want to find one that is lockable however so that wandering hands cannot take your tools or supplies from your box. If you happen to pick up a used one from a yard sale or a second hand store then you might want to give it a good cleaning.
Now you can begin gathering your supplies and tools. Some of your supplies can be easily found around the house. These include masking tape, talcum powder and emery boards or sandpaper. You can also place a small flashlight, spring-type clothespins and a wooden dowel. You can now begin to add your tools to the box.
You will need nut drivers, tweezers, screwdrivers, pliers, a hobby knife and a multi-tool that has knife blades. You will also need to add some spare parts to your range box. These include spare nosecones, spare fins, extra parachutes, igniters and additional motors. Model rocketry can have it fair share of accidents so a small first aid kit can also come in very handy as well.
Two more useful items to take to the range are a pencil, or pen, and a notebook. These will allow you to take notes for each of your launches so you can more easily find out what sort of modifications you will need to make to your rockets for their next launch. You can also jot down notes on other items you need to bring with you the next time.
