Attracting a Mentor's Help

When we approach another person to be our mentor, we are in effect asking that person to work for us, for free.  Formal mentoring programs offered by employers, community centers, church groups and so on commonly provide the mentors-usually by asking for volunteers.  The fact that enormous numbers of people do sign up to work, for free, reflects the goodwill that leads to helping relationships of various kinds (including mentoring).

However, people who volunteer to help others usually hope for three types of return for their effort:

1.  A sense that they are making a constructive difference to their mentee's life

2.  An occasional expression of appreciation or more frequent acknowledgment from their mentee

3.  An enjoyable relationship

As a mentee there are several things you can do to evoke a mentor's interest in working with you:

Know explicitly what you need or want from the relationship and have well-defined objectives

Identify problems you believe might cause you to fail to meet your objectives (past, present or future)

Have a clear statement of what you believe a mentor could do to help you

Ask for no special favors above and beyond the limits of the relationship

Develop a plan for reaching your objectives

Build a high level of comfort between you and your mentor

Be purposeful, pleasant and have interesting or challenging needs

In formal mentoring programs, the goals for mentee development might be set by the organizations.  Personality types can be matched and required competencies clearly stated.  Once a mentee has those items in shape, finding the right mentor is defined by their expertise or ability to help.

There are also times when you may want to recruit your own mentor beyond the limitations of the organization or program.  In these cases taking the above steps will help you immensely.
