Unless your standard mode of transportation is dogsled or a horse, you need to face the fact that the need for auto insurance is always going to be a part of your household budget. When you get a new car or a used car, one of the things you will need to figure in when you are determining how much car you can afford is the cost of insurance for that car. Not surprisingly, the auto insurance rates for cars of the same year and same price range can be radically different due to safety factors inherent in the type of car, which of course affects the insurance rate you will pay.

There are several ways you can save on auto insurance, and this article outlines several of those methods. Each person is different, with different needs and requirements in their household, so you should evaluate each option to determine if you can save money with it, as well as whether or not you are willing to assume the additional risk.

One of the most common methods to save money on car insurance is not to over-insure yourself or your car. If you have a car that is totally paid for and is starting to roll 300,000 miles, it probably does not make a lot of sense to carry collision insurance on that car, since the cost of that additional insurance is probably costing you more than what the car is even worth.

Another area to look at is the area of deductibles. The deductible amount is how much money YOU pay on a claim while the insurance company pays the remainder. You have different deductible amounts for the different types of insurance coverage. For example, you may have $500 deductible on collision, $500 on theft, $500 on fire, etc. Take a look at those deductibles and determine what is more reasonable. The most expensive one is going to be collision insurance. If you are financially well enough to be able to set your collision deductible to say $1000 instead of $500, you could save a big chunk of money annually. The same goes for the other coverages, but the one where you will notice the difference most readily is with the collision insurance.

If you have a young driver in your household, you realize that you are paying dearly to allow them to drive with sufficient insurance coverages. You should check with your insurance company to find out about available discounts for your young drivers, since many now offer discounts for students who have completed a safe driving course, who maintain a B average in school, and various other things.

You should also check with your insurance company to find out about multi policy discounts. For example, if you have your auto insurance AND your home insurance with the same company, many will offer a discount on both policies since you have multiple policies with them for different things.

Lastly, be sure to shop around. Just because you have been with ABC Insurance for 20 years is no guarantee that they still offer the best auto insurance rates. Do not be afraid to get an online auto insurance quote, since you may find that these are generally very aggressively priced for the same coverage.
