For those of us who tolerate the harsh winters year after year, having a fireplace at home certainly adds a great deal of warmth and cosiness. A fireplace is a highly desirable feature of a home and many people choose homes based solely on the fact that the property comes complete with a fireplace. Others decide to add a fireplace into a room after the initial construction. However, deciding on a fireplace design can be quite the task!

There are many different types of fireplaces available today. No longer are we living in a world where a fireplace consisted of a brick facade and only burned wood. The truth is that both design and function has progressed significantly since then. The first thing to consider when you decide to purchase a fireplace is whether to choose gas or an electric fireplace as each has its own unique advantages.

The advantage of having a gas fireplace is that there is no need to install a chimney. With gas fireplaces, these are installed via a tube that is vented through an outside wall. There are several different styles and sizes to choose from. In many cases there is already a gas line running into the house which makes it a whole lot easier to add the fireplace. Operating a gas fireplace is much easier than a traditional wood fireplace. With a gas fireplace you simply use the on and off switch. Some models come equipped with a remote control. With a remote control unit you can operate the fireplace from anywhere in the room. Natural gas fireplaces are convenient and safe. The ease and convenience of their use can simply be illustrated by flipping a switch in order to have a nice warm fire blazing in front of you within minutes. These gas fireplaces are safe because there is no burning wood to fall out and cause a fire.

A basic electric fireplace consists of two elements - the surround and the electric fireplace insert. Usually, the surround part of the fireplace are often more attractive, since concern for high heat is not a factor. The inserts are made of cast iron and often decorated. The electric fireplace comes with a thermostat which can be adjusted to suit personal preference. This also helps save on operating cost. Keep in mind that the energy being supplied to the fireplace is converted into heat for the room. This therefore means this type of fireplace is 100% efficient over other types of fireplaces. Once there are small children around parents tend to get overly anxious with fireplaces in homes, however with electric ones this is not a need for concern. Unlike other fireplaces, the electric fireplace is always cool to the touch. Therefore, if a child reaches out to touch the logs or exterior of the fireplace, he or she will not be burnt.
