Newcastle upon Tyne is a city in Tyne and Wear, England that was formerly part of the old English county of Northumberland. Newcastle upon Tyne derives its name from its status of being on the banks of the River Tyne, as well as the castle built by Robert II of Normandy, who was the eldest son of William the Conqueror. Before becoming Newcastle, the city was a Roman settlement starting from the 2nd century, under the name Pons Aelius.

Newcastle is also known for its traditionally famous football club Newcastle United, which currently houses stars such as England Striker Michael Owen.

One of the biggest attractions of Newcastle would be the Tyne Bridge. This suspended-deck bridge with its spectacular compression arch sits above the Tyne River. It links Newcastle with Gateshead, and is a site to behold. The Tyne Bridge was officially opened by King George V on October 10, 1928.

Another gorgeous attraction in Newcastle would be the Victorian-era Park, built back in the late 1800’s, called Jesmond Dean Park. A popular place still for young and old alike, this large park boasts beautiful greens as well as many playgrounds, built just for the kids to frolic in.

Newcastle offers a wide variety of museums for kids and adults, which in turn offers entertainment and learning value all at once.

There also exist several exquisite restaurants and food stalls in Newcastle upon Tyne. One specific place of interest is the Black Bull Public House, which is one of the most famous pubs in all Newcastle upon Tyne. It is famous on football match days and apparently offers some of the best beer in the whole city. Testimonies from match-goers state that Black Bull provides a good match experience that doesn’t require one to visit St. James Park.

A good restaurant in Newcastle is Comfort Food Co Ltd. The food is well cooked and well presented according to testimonies. The restaurant also offers wine. The restaurant is usually half full by 9 pm, so tourists should try to get there early to avoid the rush.

From sports and music, to cinemas and clubbing, Newcastle has everything in store for the city tourist. Newcastle has more things ‘on the roll’ than London, Glasgow, and Leeds, earning the reputation as the Mecca of Party in all the UK. For smooth and live music, you can head to the Metro Arena or the Newcastle Hall. For underground music action, you will find The Cluny very accommodating to lovers of music. The dry humour that Britain identifies with is found in comedy bars like the Hyena Comedy Cafe, Funny Bones, and the Cornerhouse Hotel.
