Smithfield Village is the heart of Old Dublin and right here you'll find the Old Jameson Distillery. Irish whiskey dates back to the 6th Century when Irish monks learned of the distillation process on a trip to the Middle East. As a result the craft of Irish whiskey making or "Uisce Beatha" meaning "water of life" was born. A tour of the Jameson Distillery is well worthwhile, you can experience the malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation, maturation and bottling processes first hand, followed by some whiskey tasting.
Dating back to 1780, the Old Jameson Distillery is located in Bow Street Distillery, Smithfield, Dublin. It's a unique tour of its kind and is one of the top visitor attractions in Dublin city.
Entrance fees:
Adults - EUR12.50
Students or Senior Citizens - EUR9.00,
Children - EUR6.00
Family Ticket (2 Adults and up to 4 Children under the age of 18) - EUR25.00.
Tours:
Daily from 9.30am to 5.30pm.
How to get there:
Buses: 67, 67A, 68, 69, 79, 90
Each visitor will be given a detailed and informative guided tour of the distillery. The tour lasts about 1 hour and you can choose your language - French, German, Dutch, Italian, Spanish or English.
During the tour you can re-live the story of John Jameson & Son via an audio-visual presentation, and discover how wheat barely and yeast are transformed into the world's best loved Irish Whiskey. All visitors to the Old Jameson Distillery will receive a complimentary whiskey drink while soft drinks are available for the kids. Also, a lucky volunteer will be chosen to take part in a tutored whiskey tasting test and will be rewarded with a genuine Jameson Irish whiskey certificate.
Afterwards you can pick up a souvenir or a rare bottle of Jameson Whiskey (nicely gift wrapped of course!) in the gift shop and for a bite to eat there's the 3rd Still Restaurant.
If you're looking for a great evening out, the Old Jameson Distillery provides lively entertainment with its "Shindig Evenings" where good food, music and dancing are the order of the day. These Irish nights operate Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from April to October and will cost around EUR60.00 per person. This includes a guided tour of the distillery, a four-course meal, and traditional Irish music entertainment.
