Aliaune Thiam, better known by his stage name Akon was born on April 16, 1973. He is the son of a Senegalese percussionist. At the age of fifteen, Akon had moved from Senegal to America to pursue his love of music. "Operations of Nature" was the first song he recorded; he was only fifteen years old. He was signed by SRC/Universal and released his debut album in 2004 -Trouble. This album was released after Akon's brief time in jail sentenced for armed robbery of automobiles and drug distribution charges.

 Akon's career did not stop there. His 2004 album Trouble, catapulted his fame with its release in 2004 with the hits; "Locked Up", "Lonely", "Belly Dancer", ‘Pot of Gold" and "Ghetto". The song "Lonely" reached the top five in the Billboard Hot 100.  His best year was yet to come. In 2006, he released Konvicted with major collaborations from Eminem and Snoop Dog. This album debuted at No. 2 on Billboards 200 and remained there for a total of twenty-five weeks. Konvicted also sold more than 280,000 copies in its first week alone.  Eminem is featured in the song "Smack That" and Snoop Dog is in the song "I Wanna Love You". This album is a blend of R&B, rap, and reggae with African roots. Currently this album has been recorded to have sold more than 4 million copies worldwide.

 His fame kept rising in 2006, where Akon broke a record on the Hot 100, achieving the largest climb in the chart's history. The song "Smack That" jumped from No. 95 to No. 7. His music downloads have also been record-breaking with 67,000 downloads.
