Mobile phone companies are in a constant research to manufacture all-in-one devices. Most of them are designing phones that can compensate MP3 players and help the people to reduce the number of carry along items. The music in cell phones are going beyond ring tones and the day is not too far that they would replace stand-alone products like Apple Computer's iPod.
A glimpse of the future can be sensed in the newest Motorola phones like the E398 which not only can make and receive calls, but also has a built-in MP3 player, stereo speakers, and a large color screen for playing MPEG-4 video clips and flashing lights. So in many Nokia mobile phones a removable flash memory card which could hold up to 256MB and hours of music are used.
However, storing all the favourite songs in the mobile is not always possible. An ipod can hold up to 20,000 songs, photos and many hours of video. You can even browse movies on the iTunes Store, download and synchronize it in iPod. It also supports gapless playback that seamless transitions from one song to another. And if you think of listening to Podcasts, an ipod can be the preferred option.
Phone carriers, particularly in Europe, have recognized the music services as a way to attract people to their new third-generation networks that can deliver broadband access to phones. Motorola in association with Apple has come up with iPod-style player for Motorola music phones that can play and download songs from iTunes Music Store. Moreover, service providers like Germany's T-Mobile is trying its hand to provide online music, launching a download service that allow users to play songs on their phones.
To appeal the customers, music services concentrating on mobile phones, for example Vodafone and OD2 are coming up with downloadable music services. Compared to Apple's iTunes Music Store, though these services are expensive, the researchers believe that as consumers are less tied to their computers, irrespective of cost, they would turn up to be natural audience for music on cell phones. Above all an ipod is only an entertainment device so it cannot compensate a mobile phone in terms of usefulness. That is why a multifunctional mobile phone with ipod like features is a more preferable device in terms usefulness, entertainment as well as communication.
