Digital radiology is quickly establishing itself as a cost-effective alternative to the traditional process of film-based imaging. Digital radiography, or sometimes referred to as Radiology PACS, is a type of x-ray imaging, where digital X-ray sensors in a RIS PACS format are used instead of traditional photographic film. Film is no longer needed to be developed in a darkroom. Instead, the imaging plate is run through a computer scanner to read and digitize the image using PACS software.

The PACS system makes it possible for medical images like x-rays and scans to be stored electronically and then viewed on screens. An RIS PACS creates a process that is not only film-less but also greatly improves diagnosis methods. The digital image can then be viewed and enhanced using PACS software or DICOM Solutions which functions very similarly to conventional image-processing software, using tools like contrast, brightness, and zoom. Doctors and other health professionals can now access and compare images at the touch of a button.
