Free Mentors

Mastering mentorship isn't something that has to happen face to face with someone else. I used to think that if I had zero interaction with other humans that I could never have a mentor. Boy was I up for a big surprise.

My parents used to encourage me to read books by "the great missionaries." I'm not sure if that was because they wanted me to become a missionary - I never got that impression. When I finally started reading biographies I was 22. I read books by great entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs and Farrah Gray. I began to realize that I was beginning to think and act the same way they do.

Suddenly I realized that I don't have to meet Steve Jobs personally. Since then reading has become my favourite past-time. I get new perspectives that I can share with others. I also find out what makes these people as effective as they are in the world today.

What I would encourage you to do right now is find out who are the masters in what you love. In other words, write out the top 5 activities you love doing? Some of mine are Lego, thinking positively (research) and fashion. Next do some really easy Google research (Amazon could be useful too) to find out who are the gurus in your industry.

Read about them! You will quickly find out whether you really like this industry or whether you were just interested in the idea. You will also gain valuable insight concerning how to think in your niche activity.

Whatever you love doing, do some research and find out who are the "big guys." Read about them, love them and check out when they are giving conferences or webinars. Immerse yourself in their writings and join their mailing lists.

This is how you create a mentor without actually meeting him or her. It's that easy.
